This is an inventive, creative, epic, intense composition. I think the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. First we hear mystery, then tension, then it evolves into uplifting before returning to crashing tension and mystery.

The haunting opening notes are from Jason Klobnak on trumpet. (sounds like a classic spaghetti western.) Staccato keyboard notes then add tension. Intensity grows with sudden crashing, attacking strikes. Lonnie Motley’s bass funks things up. Writing and performing this on keyboard (piano) was challenging for me. There are repetitive 8th notes (or perhaps 16th notes, depending how you score this. I didn’t transcribe this so I am not sure of the exact time signatures.) If you listen you will hear the left hand of the keys repeat three 8th notes which evolve from one time signature to another, then back again. The middle section has a complete chordal and time signature change. Those straight 8th notes evolve into triplets.

I met Dave Brubeck in the early 1980’s and was blown away at his concert. I got to interview him at a press conference while studying to be a television news journalist.
